As well as an appreciation of its growing employee base, AMPAC Day celebrates AMPAC Fine Chemicals’ commitment to Petersburg, Va., and its people.

Three years ago, the City of Petersburg celebrated the first AMPAC Day to mark the revitalization of pharmaceutical development and manufacturing in the area. AMPAC Fine Chemicals (AFC), an SK pharmteco company, took over a shuttered production facility with plans for expansion.

The expansion continues as state and local officials gathered this year for another AMPAC Day. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin joined Petersburg Mayor Samuel Parham to mark the day and the site’s ongoing expansion.

In his remarks at the event, Governor Youngkin said: "What’s happening here is a model. A model about making change. A model about opening up opportunity. A model about partnership. A model about the future. A model about meeting a need in this nation. To see it happening is so inspiring."

Since 2020, AMPAC’s Petersburg campus has doubled production capacity and tripled its employee base to nearly 150 team members. Petersburg is now home to three production buildings and 16 manufacturing lines, all making the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) that go into several life-improving pharmaceutical drugs.

Developing these ingredients is a meticulous process rooted in science that requires a commitment to research and an ability to scale that research into safe and reliable solutions. And it’s what happens every day at AFC’s Petersburg campus.

The Petersburg expansion, part of a $25 million investment, will increase AFC’s ability to develop and manufacture these active ingredients.

The AFC Petersburg expansion has helped create a pharmaceutical hub in Virginia, generating new opportunities in the region. The buildout is also integral to SK’s ongoing U.S. expansion, where it plans to invest $30 billion through 2025 in companies that generate both economic and social returns.
